Reading Across the Lines

readingbetweenReading Across the Lines (RATL) is a literacy project that connects children with their incarcerated parents by providing books to children with a voice recording of their parents reading the story. We have found RATL to be the most effective method to both facilitate literacy and soothe a confused, anxiety-ridden child whose parent they can no longer touch.

Studies show that 2/3 of children who cannot read by the end of fourth grade are more likely to end up on welfare and/or in jail. Over 70 percent of those currently incarcerated cannot read past the 4th grade level.
